Sterling Canyon has inquiring minds that wants explained the origins of Mother’s Day. Many people think including us at one point that Mother’s Day was invented by Hallmark in order to sell more greeting cards. They actually started selling Mother’s Day (MD) cards in the 1920’s. But they didn’t start MD. Mothers have been celebrated for centuries dating back to ancient Egypt with the Goddess Isis, the mother of the Pharaohs.
Greeks, Romans and Catholics celebrate their own mother gods. But it wasn’t until 1870 when Julia Ward Howe put forth a proclamation for North America that the second Sunday in May be set aside for mothers. From there the politicians took hold of it and in 1914, President Wilson signed it into law. Since then, it has grown, like Christmas, into a big commercial frenzy. Next time Sterling Canyon will describe how other countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day.
