Sterling Canyon reports on the Environmental group Earthworks that has been tightening the public relations screws on some retailers who do not sign a commitment to deal with environmentally friendly gold. The No Dirty Gold campaign’s “Golden Rules,” is a set of social, human rights and environmental criteria for mining gold and other precious metals. All department stores sell gold jewelry.
Over 80 have signed the pledge including Tiffany & Co., Helzberg Diamonds, Target and Zales. Walmart has committed itself to buy from earth friendly sources. There is one standout that is not surprising. We have reported on them before for violations with the Federal Trade Commission for non-truthful selling of gemstones. Yes folks, its Macy’s again. Macy’s refuses to sign the pledge and when asked why, they had no comment. Many customers want to know where in general their gold and gemstones are coming from. Macy’s doesn’t care. I walked through a Macy’s a couple of weeks ago and their were plenty of shoppers crowding around the jewelry counter. Perhaps that is why Macy’s doesn’t bother with the pledge. Perhaps their customers don’t care either. Shameful isn’t it. The gold and gemstone jewelry you are buying from Macy’s has a high probability that children are being used to mine the raw materials for their jewelry. Do you care? You should. Sterling Canyon cares and offers the pledge to its customers. By the way, 20% off all jewelry and free shipping through sunday.
